MY STORY

My Gombe State (North Eastern Nigeria)

My name is Babangida Aliyu and I am 40 years old from Gombe State. Due to my ignorance about HIV and the ways of transmission I often patronise commercial sex workers and derive pleasure spending time in the brothel.

On the 30th of August 2013 staff from Kishimi (one of the CIHP supported CBOs) came to the brothel at Sabon Layi for HTC outreach where they met me critically ill, Before my coming to the brothel, I had lost hope of living but my story changed when I was counseled and consented to be tested the result was positive so I was immediately referred to Gombe Specialist Hospital for treatment. I readily went and returned to Kishimi office confirming my enrollment. Two weeks after receiving the first dose of my treatment, I phoned to thank Kishimi very much for coming to my rescue because I am now stronger, healthier, and happier and have regained my lost hope.

I now serve as an interim chairman of Kishimi support group; and I happily go around encouraging other members who are still hiding for fear of stigma to come and access services. Also I operate a tailoring shop and have signed an MOU with Kishimi to be training other positive clients on tailoring skills which will help them to be self reliant.  At the Zaurawa forum (An initiative by the State Government to support marriage among divorcees, widows and widowers) I met Fatsuma who also tested positive and now we have consented to get marry. We have completed all the tests and now awaiting the outcome of the committee’s report after which Gombe State Government will conduct a mass wedding for all the applicants at a date not yet fixed.
